Understanding Mobile Broadband Technology

The telecoms industry as a whole and the mobile broadband market in particular is continuing to experience growth in Australia, with mobile broadband estimated to have grown over 76% in the last year alone. It is also interesting to note that experts believe that rather than having a negative effect on the growth of fixed line broadband services, mobile broadband in the Australian market will in fact compliment and enhance the fixed line alternatives, and the mobile broadband market has generated nearly a billion dollars in the last year.

Though mobile broadband is still on the rise you may not be entirely sure of how the technology works, what kind of service it provides, who it is best suited for and why you yourself might consider mobile broadband as an option. The most commonly cited reason for mobile broadband`s popularity is the true portability of the mobile broadband connection and the flexibility that it gives users.Mobile broadband does not require a landline telephone or cable connection but as the name suggests uses 3G mobile telephone networks to connect users around the country. All four of the major mobile network operators now have mobile broadband plans, and if you sign up for a fixed term mobile broadband contract you should expect to receive the only thing you`ll need to connect to mobile broadband. That item is a USB dongle, usually similar in shape and size to a USB memory stick you may have seen or own, and the dongle will contain a modem and all of the software you`ll need to get connected. You`ll just need to plug it into your laptop or PC and follow the set up prompts to get connected, and provided you`re in an area with adequate 3G network coverage this could be completed in a matter of minutes. At the moment, Telstra have a 3G network which makes mobile broadband available to 99% of Australians, including those living in non-urban areas so chances are you`ll be able to get mobile broadband where you live. Speeds vary from network to network, and are also affected by the level of coverage in your area, but an average of 3.6Mbps is a very acceptable speed for most.

Mobile broadband has benefits for two main groups of people. The first are the home users who don`t have a land line connection and don`t want one, whether they are students or living in rented accommodation. Mobile broadband is also great for people who don`t use the internet too often as you can opt for a pay as you go package where you only pay for the amount of data you download over your connection. Secondly mobile broadband is great for business users who are out and about more than they are in the office but who still want access to a fast broadband connection wherever they are. Mobile broadband will allow you to access all of the same things as you would sitting at your computer at work, but with the freedom to be anywhere in the country. Compare mobile broadband online to get the best deals and choose the right package for you.
