In this period of rapid development in the Northern Territory, with offshore gas soon to come online, a new railway service to Darwin and surging tourism growth, the challenge ahead for the Department of Education and Training (DET) is to support lifelong learning for all territorians and prepare and skill a workforce capable of keeping pace with the changing labour market. DET provides and promotes an environment of lifelong learning and employment and training pathways and opportunities to meet these challenges head on. It also promotes a safe workplace, learning and public environment. The department, consisting of employment and training, education and NT WorkSafe business areas, employs about 4000 staff across the Territory. The department's education business area is focused on providing quality education for all students, with a focus on meeting indigenous students' needs, leading to employment, training or further education. The employment and training business area is focused on increasing access to employment and training pathways for territorians to build and skill the workforce to meet the growing demands of the NT labour market.
